Best way to catch a fox?
« on: January 14, 2012, 03:56:26 PM »
I'm new to the village, in fact I'm new to the countryside having lived in the bell end region of London since I was little - I wanted to know the best way to catch or trap a fox? We have a cheeky basil brush character who keeps coming into our garden which isn't going to be good when I start keeping chickens in spring!

Does anyone have a foxtrap I can borrow or do I need to get a man in?  ???

The fox has been here longer than you have. What do you propose doing with it once you've caught it ? good luck to the fox !!!

Warning: you risk extreme criminal violence upon yourself and your family/ property if found by certain groups or factions to be causing harm or distress to animals. be extremely careful who you talk to about trapping or killing anything. Certain individuals will go to extraordinary lengths to track down those involved in (often legal and seemingly humane) animal removal and or destruction. Good luck!

It seems that you "need to get a man in".

A quick Google came up with http://www.pestcontrol-uk.org/pests/foxes

This page includes the statement: "Foxes can be trapped or snared but only by a professional pest contractor. Foxes can not be poisoned under the legislation "Protection of Animals Act 1911".

Dunno about shooting them. There used to be someone in the village with a hunting rifle in Winchester .270 calibre but I think that there are laws that prevent these being used in built up areas  ;D

I wouldn't want to hurt the fox, just to relocate it to somewhere like Norfolk. I reckon I could catch it with one those big fishing nets ???

With the hunting laws being so strict at the present time
        i would sugest.
1 shoot it with a shot gun
B shoot it with a rifle
7 shoot it with a bow and arrow
         G for gun
A quick seach on ebay and you will find most if not all of the above.
   I hope this has helped.

Not sure about catching a fox to be perfectly honest, but I do have a rat in my kitchen and am unsure of what to do

Suggestions:

Trap the fox and let it loose in the kitchen ...

Or borrow someone's cat, and let it loose in the kitchen ... (mice and rats really don't like the smell of cats).

Or you could send for South Cambs Pest Control (but, unless it's been altered recently, the fee these days is in the region of £50).

Well, we haven't seen the fox since I made this post, perhaps he is a Linton forum reader! I have been told that a supersoaker full of piping hot water can be a good deterrent as well so i have on standby ....

..... I imagine that would also work on everything from small rodents to door-to-door salesmen.
